The most influential thinker in the fifth century, Socrates’ dedication to careful reasoning transformed the entire enterprise.  His willingness to question and his determination to accept nothing less than an adequate account of the nature of things make him the first clear exponent of critical philosophy.

Socrates felt knowledge was a living, interactive thing.  His method of philosophical inquiry eventually gave rise to the idea that truth needs to be pursued by modifying one’s position through questioning and conflict with opposing ideas.  It is this idea of the truth being pursued, rather than discovered, that characterizes Socratic thought.  Socrates’ dedication to true knowledge and the importance of questioning truly marks his time in history as a great educator.
